Week Two: A Period of Change (1870-1950)

Day 1: The Early Years (Late 1800s – 1919)
Activity 1: St Joseph’s Cathedral

The Transitional Cathedral is located at 234 Hereford Street, Christchurch, New Zealand

Cathedral in the Square

The Transitional Cathedral is only a five minute walk away from the site of the seriously damaged Cathedral in the Square. Walk northwest through Latimer Square to Worcester Street. 500 metres along Worcester St you'll see the damaged stone Cathedral.

The "Cardboard" Cathedral

ChristChurch Cathedral is slightly different. The original Cathedral was badly damaged in the Christchurch earthquake in February 2011. We are operating from our new temporary home, the Transitional Cathedral in Latimer Square, Christchurch. It is the world’s only cathedral made substantially of cardboard.

  1. Kia ora James,
My name is Patricia from the Summer Learning Journey team.
I really liked that you choose the transitional cathedral to talk about. It is so fascinating to learn that is made of sustainable cardboard, I didn't know that!
Also, could you remove that last sentence as it does make sense. "We are operating..." doesn't apply to this post.

Furthermore, in order for you to gain full points for this activity could you research when it was made and how long it took for it to be construct. Could you do that and let me know?

Keep up with the great work!
    Kia kaha,
    Patricia

  2. Hi James,

It's so great to see you getting involved in the summer learning journey! Have you been to the Christchurch Cathedral? I think it's pretty amazing that people worked out how to build a whole cathedral out of cardboard tubes! I grew up in Christchurch, and when I was little my big sister used to take me to the old cathedral (the one that got destroyed in the earthquake). We would go there and climb up the spiral, stone steps in the bell tower and look out over Cathedral Square. I don't think I'd want to walk up steps made of cardboard though!

So proud of you getting involved with this project, good job!

    :)

    Miss H
