The Kiwi is a native bird in New Zealand. The Kiwi can not fly. Kiwis also have loose feathers that are more like fur. Unlike other birds the Kiwis feathers moult throughout the year. The Kiwi is the only bird with nostrils. Kiwis have no tail. Kiwis have whiskers like a cat. There are 68,000 Kiwis left. Kiwis like to eat seeds, grubs and many different worms. There are five different species of kiwi. Brown Kiwi. Rowi. Tokoeka. Today scientists have found five different species of Kiwi. Kiwis live for between 25-50 years. Chicks hatch fully feathered. They feed at about five days old and they never get fed by their parents. Juveniles grow slowly and take about five years to grow. The biggest threat to baby Kiwis is stoats. Stoats don't mainly feed on Kiwis but they will kill even if they're not hungry. There are also ferrets, weasels, rats, possums, cats and dogs. Vehicles also kill Kiwis. Apteryx is the scientific name for a Kiwi. There is a Maori legend about the Kiwi Tane-mahuta god of the forest worrying about his children in the trees as bugs and birds were eating away at them. All the birds didn't want to sleep on the forest floor but the Kiwi sacrificed his wings and feathers to live on the forest floor and that's how the Kiwi became our national bird.
